Q. Do you have to be Maori to become a Maori Warden?
A. No you do not need to be Maori to become a Maori Warden in fact we welcome applications from persons of all walks of life. All we ask is that you are committed to serving your community and are able to exercise the values of a Maori Warden. (Unity, Care, Honesty, Integrity, Commitment, Dedication)
Q. Do I need to speak or understand Maori to become a Maori Warden
A. No you do not need to speak Maori although a commitment and willingness to learn Te Reo Maori is required even at the basic levels. Maori Wardens play a vital role in the revitalisation of the Maori Culture, language and values so it is important to have this commitment.
Q. How old do I have to be to become a Maori Warden?
A. Anyone from the age of 14 Years and up (with parent/guardian Consent) may become a Cadet Maori Warden. Anyone from the age of 16+ can become a Recruit / Trainee Maori Warden. Anyone 18+ Can on successful completion of their recruit / trainee period be nominated to become a Warranted Maori Wardens. The period of appointments are 3 years in duration at which time a reappointment application is made to the minister or relevant governing agency / body.
Q. How long do I have to complete my Recruit / Trainee period?
A. The Recruit / Trainee phase is designed to be completed within 6-9 months depending on the individual commitment levels of the individual. Each individual is assessed on their own individual needs, service, commitment and training completed. Each Recruit/Trainee has up to 2 years to complete their training.
