My name is Jacqui Te Wani I am the Kaiwhakahaere of the Otautahi Maori Wardens. I’ve held this position for 9 years in that time I have seen a lot of changes I have seen people come and go but in all that time the Otautahi Maori Wardens has stayed firm to the kaupapa.

At present we do day time/ night time and waka weekly patrol. We do food parcels twice a week plus give donations to 10 food pantries in the eastern suburbs and then events. Otautahi Maori Wardens has an open policy when it comes to community events for example: Manu Korero, Maori Markets, Maori Womans Welfare League Conference, Electric Ave, Hello Hornby and Affirm these events can range from 900 to 35000 people from the community but this all changes when we are asked to work at a tangihanga

Photos: the 2 photos I have attached the first is of myself and the second is with some of our members. The gentlemen dressed in Black his name is Garry Te Wani and I can say with great pride and fact that he is the longest running active Maori Warden in the south island and he is also my husband. Garry has been a Maori warden for 33 years, there are only 2 other ex Maori warden members that are still alive and they are in Otautahi.

Na, Jacqui Te Wani
